I got asked quite often about how to draw white dresses. Today, I’m sharing a drawing tutorial for this topic. Whether you draw on paper or on digital devices, you will find this tutorial helpful in some way. Let’s dive in!
Choose background color to make your design pop!
In general, we work on white paper. Most of the time, it’s fine if the garment’s colors are not white. If the white dress has pencil lines and that is what you like, it’s great! But what if you don’t want to have those dark pencil or ink lines?
Traditionally, artists used paper in other colors instead when they worked with white garments. Brown, nude, gray or black colors are popular for bridal illustrations. However, for some talented artists who work on white paper, their complex color mixing skills can achieve very beautiful results.
A common technique used in fashion illustration is marker colors. Artists use under tone color for shadow before applying white texture over it. The popular colors are gray and nude for coloring wedding gowns and white evening dresses. For example, the Dior Couture gown worn by Céline Dion at the Olympics 2024 was beautifully sketched. The artist used a gray under tone and fine white lines for embellishment.
Procreate Drawing : Goddess Bridal Gown
Inspiration: in this tutorial, the artwork I made was an off-white draped chiffon gown inspired by Greek – Roman Goddesses. If you like to design this type of gown, I recommend that you take a look into Madame Grès. Her stunning and inspirational work has inspired so many designers for many generations.
Design elements and mannequin showcase: When I planned my design, I wanted to use some silver embellishment to incorporate the fine pleated draping technique. So, I made a metallic lace trimming brushes “Gold Lace Trimming” prior to this tutorial. For the model, I aimed for the high-end bridal showroom window display mood. I made the Mannequin Model PNG Cliparts and used the black one for this tutorial. Black mannequins are widely used in wedding dress boutiques to show design details, laces, embroidery of white wedding dresses. The chiffon fabric is made with “Artist’s Markers” brushes.
