There are several New Year celebrations around the world. Each region has their own auspicious occasion. Chinese New Year is one of the biggest New Year event in Asia. In Thailand where I am from, the majority of mixed Thai-Chinese families definitely celebrate it. It’s a couple days event where they have ceremony remembering, praying and offering goods to their departed ancestors, giving blessings to their family members, family dinner, etc. For those who celebrate Chinese New Year, I wish you prosperity, a very healthy body and mind. 🧧🏮❤️🍊🎁
I decided to create a drawing for this occasion. This cheerful hair style and the a high neckline Mandarin collar are traditional fashion look which is popular among young women. I drew a really high neckline because I remember that Maggie Chan wore this super high Mandarin collar in the movie “In The Mood For Love.” She was stunning! Red and gold are auspicious colors in Thai and Chinese culture so… I obviously had to use that. I used a photo (appeared in this tutorial) for a reference when I drew the floral embroidery arrangement. Then, the rest was designed by me 🙂 Making the Chinese knot was really fun. I hope you like it. 🥰
Procreate Tutorial: Chinese New Year Look
There are 2 main parts in this tutorial:
1. Model coloring : learn how I use my fashion figure template stamp and combine a new hair style, sketching clothe over the template, trace the body line, body coloring, and makeup process.
2. Garment coloring : learn how to create color base, shadow, and embroidery design using my Procreate Gold Threads brush packs.
In this tutorial, I used Pose 29 from 10 Head Fashion Figure Templates (80 poses) to build the pose and hair style. For sketching and coloring, brushes are from NM Compact Art Box. The main coloring brush is Hudson (wash) watercolor brush (for body, makeup and hair. For embroidery, I used The Original Gold Threads Vol.1 and Vol.2. The lanterns was painted with watercolor brushes from Day Dream Watercolor.
✨Texture grain on the artwork was added and used in Linear Burn blend mode with Granulated brush from Day Dream Watercolor.
